Broken Hill

The legendary outback city of Broken Hill is rich with history, a vibrant artistic community and cast of colourful characters. Discover amazing galleries, famous sculptures, cool cafes, palatial federation heritage and towering mining landmarks in Australia’s first heritage-listed city. Broken Hill is Australia’s oldest mining town, with a colonial history dating back to the 1880s. Poised dramatically above the landscape, the Line of Lode Miner’s Memorial celebrates the life and work of more than 800 miners who lost their lives here. This striking memorial provides a commanding view of the town.

At the Pro Hart Gallery you can enjoy browsing Pro's work, purchase gifts and learn a little more about one of Australia's most iconic and enduring artists. Pro Hart was an artist across many forms. From drawing and sketching to the famed landscapes and narrative paintings of his heyday, Pro was energised by all forms of creativity.
The Mundi Mundi plains lookout is on the edge of the world. From the top of the hill, the flat lands of the Mundi Mundi plains stretch out for an eternity. Take a self-guided walk and enjoy a champagne picnic with a view. Visiting at dusk and watching the sun dip behind the alluvial fans on the edge of the vast plains is an unforgettable experience.
Step back in time at the Silverton Gaol and Historical Museum. Virtually every aspect of life in Silverton's heyday is represented, with literally thousands of items on display. Tools of the trades of mining, transport, entertainment, technology, food, religion, sport, education and medicine are accompanied by a range of photographs, painting a vivid picture of Silverton's early years.
