Bulloo Shire

Bulloo Shire is located in south-west Queensland, about 1,000 kilometres west of the Brisbane CBD. Bulloo Shire is a predominantly rural area, with a small township at Thargomindah. The Shire encompasses a total land area of about 73,880 square kilometres. Rural land is used largely for sheep and cattle grazing, with oil mining and gas production also being important industries.

Standing proudly on the outskirts of the town is a large brick building known to the locals as the Old Thargomindah Hospital. Built in 1888 out of locally made, unfired mud-bricks, the building is a tribute to the tenacity of Thargomindahs pioneers and has always played an important, often sentimental, role in the community.
The Burke and Wills Dig Tree is one of Australia’s National icons and an enduring reminder of the pioneering spirit and extreme harshness of the Outback. Nappa Merrie Station is proud to officially manage the site on behalf of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland.
The Thargomindah Artesian Hydro Power Plant is believed to be the oldest, working unit in Australia, and possibly the world!
