Central Highlands

Tasmania's Central Highlands boast glorious scenery and dramatic built heritage dating back to the early 19th century. It is the birthplace of Tasmania’s Hydro-Electric power system and home to the best trout fishing in the southern hemisphere. The Central Highlands covers 8,010 sq km, or 12 per cent of Tasmania’s land mass, has a permanent population of over 2,000, many of whom own shacks in the communities around the region’s numerous spectacular lakes and mountains.

The Tarn Shelf contains a picturesque series of small glacial lakes. This is a long circuit walk that takes in the Tarn Shelf, Lake Newdegate, Twilight Tarn and Lake Webster. The walk takes you across the Tarn Shelf, returning via the lower lakes. The tarns are often frozen in winter.
Lake King William is located to the west of Derwent Bridge and is a popular local trout fishing location. For many years, this lake has produced large numbers of fish. Compared to those lakes around Miena, the fish are a bit smaller but the numbers are extraordinary.
Lake Echo is a large, expansive hydro-electric impoundment with generally deep and clear water. Much of the lake is surrounded by steep sided eucalypt bushland although movement along the shoreline is reasonable owing to the large draw-down in lake level exposing expanses of rocky shore.
