Moyne Shire

Moyne Shire (1994-) in western Victoria adjoins the southern coastline and extends westwards from near Terang to Lake Condah and Mount Eccles, a distance of about 100 km. Moyne shire’s name came from the Moyne River which rises in the middle of the western part near Hawkesdale and empties at Port Fairy, the shire’s administrative centre. Moyne is the name of a fifteenth century Irish abbey, County Mayo.

Head out on the Lake Surprise walk and descend into the crater of this dormant volcano. Follow the lake's edge through Manna Gum and Blackwood bushland before looping back to Budj Bim Campground. The peak of Budj Bim, which has great cultural significance to the Gunditjmara people, overlooks the trail.
Tower Hill is a major natural landmark on the Princes Highway between Warrnambool and Port Fairy in south-western Victoria, and many people visit it to enjoy a picnic or walk, to see its wildlife or to study its geology. As a giant maar or volcanic explosion crater it is of international and national geological significance.
Griffiths Island is a sanctuary for plants, birds and animals. The island is about 1.5 kilometres long and 0.8 kilometres wide at its widest point. It is bordered on its northern side by the Moyne River, which has been channeled between stone 'training walls' and provides easy access by sea to the port of Port Fairy. Originally a cluster of three separate islands – Goat, Rabbit and Griffiths – harbour works have consolidated them into a single island which protects the mouth of the Moyne and shelters Port Fairy Bay.
